Baseball Bounces Back with 5-2 Win at Villanova

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Junior Brady Renner turned in another strong start, yielding just one earned run over 7.2 innings of work, as the George Washington baseball team evened its series at Villanova with a 5-2 win on Friday afternoon.
Renner surrendered less than two earned runs for the eighth time this season, a feat he has accomplished in every start thus far, to lower his season ERA to 2.05. He allowed only five hits on the afternoon and two walks while scattering five hits with three strikeouts.
A day after being limited to just four hits in a 3-0 loss, GW (17-18) rebounded with 13 base knocks on Friday afternoon with five players contributing multiple hits.
After a scoreless opening three innings, the Colonials scored four unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth.
Junior Robbie Metz got the scoring started in the fourth with a RBI single, driving in junior Mark Osis who had hit a one-out double. Later in the inning, senior Eli Kashi tallied a RBI on a sacrifice bunt to make the score 2-0.
In the fifth, GW got a sacrifice fly from Osis and a RBI single from freshman Nate Fassnacht to make the score 4-0.
Villanova took advantage of a passed ball to score its first run in the sixth inning, with an unearned run charged to Renner's line.
A one-out triple and RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth spelled the end of the day for Renner. He turned the ball over to senior Eddie Muhl, who navigated through the jam to limit the damage.
GW got an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a RBI groundout by Metz, and Muhl fired a scoreless ninth to clinch the game and his sixth save of the season.
Fassnacht recorded his third three-hit game of the season by going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI while senior Joey Bartosic (2 H, 1 BB), senior Andrew Selby (2 H, 1 R, 1 BB), Osis (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 SB) and Metz (2 H, 2 RBI) all added multi-hit efforts.
GW aims for the series win in Saturday's finale. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm. with freshman Elliott Raimo on the mound.
