GW 4 , VCU 2 | VCU 11, GW 2
RICHMOND, Va. - The George Washington baseball team won the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader at VCU, 4-2, on the strength of a strong pitching performance from junior starter Brady Renner. VCU rebounded in the nightcap to knock off the Colonials, 11-2.
The teams will meet in the rubber match on Sunday. First pitch from The Diamond is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Game 1: GW 4, VCU 2
Junior Brady Renner turned in another gem for his third win of the season, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits across eight dominant innings. He allowed multiple hits in just one inning while finishing with one walk and one strikeout.
A throwing error led to a 1-0 lead for VCU in the bottom of the second inning but the Colonials stormed back to take a 3-1 lead with a trio of runs in the top of the third inning.
Freshman Nate Fassnacht started the rally with a leadoff double and moved up to third on a bunt single by junior Robbie Metz. A perfectly-executed double steal tied the game at 1-1 and a RBI single by junior Matt Cosentino moments later gave GW a lead it would not relinquish.
The third run scored on a RBI bunt single by Mark Osis.
Renner cruised through the rest of the game before allowing a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but he retired the side to squelch the threat and gave the ball to senior Eddie Muhl in the ninth.
A hit batter, error and a single loaded the bases for the Rams but Muhl slammed the door shut for his third save of the season.
Renner lowered his season ERA to 2.13 with the performance while Muhl picked up his 32nd career save.
Game 2: VCU 11, GW 2
The Rams sprinted out of the gates to a 4-0 lead in the first inning before doubling up their score with another four spot in the bottom of the third inning to move ahead, 8-0.
VCU scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 11-0 before the Colonials found the scoreboard in the top of the eighth on a two-run double by Cosentino.
