ARLINGTON, Va. - Freshman Elliott Raimo and sophomore Will Kobos combined to allow just five hits as the George Washington baseball team recorded its second shutout in as many days in a 4-0 win over Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field.
GW (8-11) allowed a total of just three runs over the three-game series with consecutive shutouts on Saturday and Sunday to clinch its second weekend series win of the season.
The Colonials' defense played another big role in the shoutout by turning three double plays on the afternoon to bring the season total to 20 twin killings in 19 games.
Raimo was on point on the mound to earn his second win of the season. He allowed two hits across six shutout innings. He struck out three and walked three but kept Monmouth off balance throughout the day.
Kobos came in and pitched three shutout innings to close out the game and pick up his second save of the season, only allowing a trio of hits with one strikeout.
GW broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a pair of two-out RBIs from Joey Bartosic and Andrew Selby. Bartosic delivered a two-out RBI double for the first run of the game and Selby followed moments later with a run-scoring single.
A pair of insurance runs came across in the later innings. In the seventh, Selby drove a 1-1 pitch to the power alley in left center field and came all the way around to score on the inside-the-park home run.
GW collected three hits in the bottom of the eighth, with junior Robbie Metz providing a RBI single for the final 4-0 tally.
Monmouth got one man aboard in the top of the ninth but a 6-4-3 double play clinched the win for the Colonials.
Selby (2-for-2, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Bartosic (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), Metz (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and junior Brandon Chapman (2-for-4) all finished with multi-hit games to lead the Colonials at the plate.
GW will hit the road for a midweek game at UMBC on Tuesday (6 p.m.) before returning home next weekend to open its Atlantic 10 schedule against Massachusetts next weekend.
