Baseball Topped by Monmouth

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The GW baseball team entered its weekend series with the Monmouth Hawks having won three in a row but saw that winning streak snapped in a 3-1 loss on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Freshman Jaret Edwards was splendid in relief for the Colonials, coming on in the fourth and working five innings of one-run ball. The right-hander struck out a career-high eight and surrendered just two hits.
Monmouth starting pitcher Jordan McCrum turned in a gem, allowing one run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings while the Hawks offense supplied just enough offense to hand GW (6-11) the loss.
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings, as Dan Shea drove a solo homer to right field before a sacrifice fly RBI with the bases loaded an inning later provided what would be the winning run.
In the sixth, Monmouth (3-11) extended its lead when Shaine Hughes also hit a solo home run to right field. GW would answer in the seventh, finally getting to McCrum when designated hitter Cody Bryant singled up the middle with runners on the corners to make it 3-1. With two one and one out, the Hawks went to the bullpen and righty Joe Molettiere got a groundball double play on his first pitch to squelch the threat.
GW again threatened in the ninth, when it put two on with one out, but Monmouth's Justin Andrews was able to retire the side for the save.
GW starter Brady Renner (1-3) was pegged with the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in three innings of work , while McCrum (1-2) got the win.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. from Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
