MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Sophomore Logan Lowe claimed the first championship of his collegiate career by shooting a 2-under par 69 in the final round while the Colonials took a second-place finish as a team at the Bash at the Beach Invitational which concluded Tuesday at The Surf Golf and Beach Club.
Amid cold and windy conditions, Lowe was one of just three players in the 96-man field to card a sub-70 round on Tuesday, joining Camilo Aguado of Jacksonville State and Drew Eaton of Western Illinois, who also shot 69. Lowe turned in a clean scorecard, with 16 pars and two birdies, to move from T-8th into a tie for first with U Minn Woon of Fairleigh Dickinson.
Lowe's teammates also closed well, as GW's final round 5-over par 289 tied for the lowest in the 16-team field, to move the Colonials from fourth place to second with a three round total of 875, just one shot back of champion South Carolina Beaufort (874).
Redshirt junior Christian Cichan shot even-par 71 on Tuesday to finish +4 for the tournament and in a tie for eighth, while junior Jack Porcelli was just outside the top-10 at 6-over (69-74-76=219). Classmate Vince Palazzolo played his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 2-over par 74 and freshman Yoo Jin Kim shot a 75.
"The guys came out mentally prepared and really got into the round right away, and fought through the tough conditions the whole day," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "I'm very proud of them and the effort they displayed. They battled hard and put themselves in a position to win. It stings a little to come up one stroke short, but hats off to the guys for coming back from six down and giving themselves a chance to win."
Lowe, who knocked on the door of his first win with T-2nd and T-7th finishes in the fall, played better as the tournament went on. He opened with a 2-over 73, shot even-par 71 in the second round and then saved his best for last with an aggressive approach on Tuesday.
"From the start I took aggressive lines at the pins," said Lowe. "Playing bogey free for me in the winds we had was a big confidence builder, knowing I can pick apart a golf course and make birdies when I need to. It feels great to get my first college win. It's something I've been working towards for a long time, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the spring."
The Colonials are set to get right back into action, playing at the George Mason Mission Inn Spring Spectacular at El Campeon Golf Course in Florida starting on Saturday.
"I'm proud we stuck to the process and didn't worry about the results," said Scheinost. "We've got a lot to take away from here as me move forward the rest of the season."
