ARLINGTON, Va. - Senior starter Shane Sweeney allowed just one earned run across 5.2 innings of work and sophomore Will Kobos earned his first collegiate save with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief as the George Washington baseball team downed NJIT, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon to clinch the series win at Tucker Field.

GW (5-10) aims for the sweep on Sunday afternoon in game three. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

After a scoreless opening two innings from Sweeney, senior Cody Bryant gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead when he provided a RBI single in the bottom of the second.

NJIT (2-9) responded to tie the game in the top of the third but senior Bobby Campbell put GW ahead for good with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning. Campbell's hit drove in junior Robbie Metz, who had singled with one out and stole second base.

Sweeney allowed just two base runners across the next two innings before running into trouble in the sixth. He allowed a leadoff single before getting the next two outs. Kobos then entered in relief and froze the batter on a called third strike to maintain the 2-1 lead.

GW added a pair of key insurance runs in the later innings. In the seventh, Bryant doubled with one out and then senior Eli Kashi drove in pinch runner Matt Cosentino to make the score 3-1.

In the eighth inning, junior Mark Osis drew a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Campbell for GW's final tally.

Kobos had to work out of a jam in the ninth to clinch the save. He allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the inning but retired the side on an infield fly, strikeout and groundout.
