Baseball Hosts Delaware State in Home Opener on Wednesday

LEADING OFF: The George Washington baseball team will play its first home game of the 2017 season when it hosts Delaware State at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: GW opened the 2017 season by taking one of four games at Auburn over the weekend.
The Colonials fell in game one, 9-0, before narrowly dropping game two by a score of 2-0.
GW used a five-run ninth inning to rally for a 9-5 win in game three before concluding the weekend with a 4-3 loss on Sunday.
HOT BATS TO START: Four players accumulated at least four hits in the opening weekend series, with senior first baseman Bobby Campbell leading the way by going 6-for-15 with a pair of RBI.
Junior Mark Osis doubled three times across the four-game series while batting .294 (5-for-17) and driving in a trio of runs.
METZ DOES BOTH: Junior second baseman and pitcher Robbie Metz excelled both at the plate and on the mound this past weekend. At the plate he went 5-for-15 with one double and four RBIs across the four-game series.
He started the series finale on the mound and allowed just one earned run on eight hits across five innings of work.
FASSNACHT'S DEBUT: Freshman shortstop Nate Fassnacht started all four games of the series at Auburn and looked up to the task both in the field and at the plate. He doubled in his first collegiate at bat on Friday and finished the weekend batting .333 (5-for-15) with two runs, one double and one RBI.
SERIES HISTORY: GW is 11-8-1 in the all-time series against Delaware State, including last season's 8-0 win over the Hornets in the 2016 home opener.
