WASHINGTON - George Washington Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero has named Torrie Browning head coach of the GW women's tennis program.
"Torrie has proven her ability to lead GW tennis to success, and we are confident that she will continue to shape GW women's tennis into one of the top programs in the conference as head coach," Nero said.
Browning will lead the Colonials after serving as interim head coach of both GW's men's and women's squads beginning in February of 2016. Browning had previously joined GW as associate head coach of both programs prior to the 2014-15 season.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be selected as the head coach of GW's women's tennis program," said Browning. "I would really like to thank Patrick Nero and Nicole Early for giving me this amazing opportunity. The team has great potential, and I am extremely excited to continue working with the women's team."
The former four-time Missouri Valley All-Conference selection at Wichita State took GW's women's squad deep into the A-10 Championship, advancing to the semifinal round as the seventh seed after upsetting second-seeded Massachusetts in the quarterfinals. Browning also led GW's men's team to its fifth Atlantic 10 title in the last six seasons en route to the league's Coach of the Year nod.
The Tucson, Arizona, native coached eight student-athletes to A-10 All-Conference honors in 2016.
Prior to GW, Browning spent five years at Norfolk State, serving as assistant coach for both men's and women's programs from 2009-13 before being promoted to associate head coach of the women's squad for the 2013-14 season.
