LEADING OFF: The George Washington baseball team hosts first-place VCU in a three-game series at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: GW won its Atlantic 10 series at Dayton over the weekend to improve to 8-5 in conference play. The Colonials are currently in a five-way tie for second place in the Atlantic 10 standings behind league-leader VCU. GW is tied with Saint Joseph's, Fordham, Rhode Island and Saint Louis.
DOUBLE-DIGIT HITS: GW tallied 12 hits in the series-clinching win over Dayton on Sunday. It marked the 20th time this season that the Colonials' lineup combined to reach double-digit hits in a game. The team is 13-7 in such games. As a team, GW ranks second in the conference with a .283 batting average.
SEVEN STRAIGHT: Junior Joey Bartosic has hit safely in his last seven games to raise his season average to .311. Across his last seven, he is batting .413 (12-for-29) with six runs scored and five RBIs. He also has three multiple-hit games during the stretch to raise his team-leading total to 19 games.
TWO FOR YOU: GW ranks second in the Atlantic 10 with 73 doubles on the season, paced by junior Kevin Mahala (17 - 1st A-10, 22nd NCAA) and junior Bobby Campbell (14 - 4th A-10). The lineup averages 1.74 two-baggers per game.
DEFENSE: One season removed from setting a program record for fielding percentage (.976), GW is continuing to play excellent defense in the field. The Colonials boast a .975 fielding percentage through 42 games, a number that is best in the Atlantic 10 and ranks 37th nationally.
SCOUTING VCU: The Rams enter the series with the best overall record in the Atlantic 10 at 28-14, while also sitting in first place in the league standings at 10-5.
VCU is coming off a rain-shortened, non-conference 8-5 win over VMI in seven innings on Tuesday.
The team boasts the second-best team ERA in the conference at 3.91 while batting .261 as a team. The reigning Atlantic 10 Champions are led by Jimmy Kerrigan (.325, 10 2B, 3 HR, 23 RBI) and Matt Davis (.311, 8 2B, 4 HR, 23 RBI).
