WASHINGTON - Senior Luke Olson spun eight innings of shutout relief and a trio of position players each tallied three-hit games as the George Washington baseball team completed a sweep of George Mason with a 9-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (16-21, 6-3 A-10) has now won four games in a row.
George Mason (10-26, 2-10 A-10) took advantage of an error on a failed pickoff attempt to score three runs in the top of the first but the Colonials retaliated immediately in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game with three runs on three hits and an error.
Junior Joey Bartosic was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a base hit by sophomore Robbie Metz. The pair each advanced on a double steal and then Bartosic scored on a RBI groundout by sophomore Mark Osis to make the score 3-1.
Junior Bobby Campbell followed with a RBI single to cut the deficit to one and then junior Kevin Mahala laced a RBI double to the gap in right center field to tie the score at 3-3.
Senior Luke Olson entered in relief to start the second inning and retired the side in order. He was dominant for the remainder of the game, scattering three hits while allowing just one walk with five strikeouts. He stranded leadoff baserunners in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings en route to the win.
Junior Eli Kashi led off the bottom half of the second with a single and then moved to third after consecutive bunt singles by Bartosic and Metz loaded the bases. Osis then reached on catcher's interference, driving in Kashi from third, to give GW a 4-3 lead.
The Colonials padded their lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sequence that started with a leadoff walk by Campbell. After a flyout, Cosentino singled to put runners on first and second. Campbell then stole third and scored on an error to make the score 5-3, while Cosentino moved up to second.
Junior Cody Bryant then provided a pinch-hit single to advance Cosentino to third base, and sophomore Brandon Chapman followed with a RBI single to make the score 6-3. Bartosic then came to the plate and roped a two-run double to the gap in left center to push the advantage to 8-3.
The Colonials added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth when Cosentino provided a RBI double to extend the lead to 9-3.
Olson held the Patriots hitless in the final two innings to clinch the game.
Bartosic finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, two stolen bases, and one run from the leadoff spot.
Campbell continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-4 with two runs one one RBI.
Cosentino added three hits in five at-bats with one run and one RBI.
GW will play a pair of midweek games against Towson (Tues., 3 p.m.) and at Georgetown (Weds., 7 p.m.) before traveling to Dayton for a three-game series next weekend.
