THIS WEEK: The George Washington golf team plays its second event of the spring season Monday and Tuesday as it heads to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the Bash at the Beach Collegiate Invitational hosted by Appalachian State.
FORMAT: 54 holes (36 Monday, 18 Tuesday). Teams will tee off at 8 a.m. ET on Monday to compete in rounds one and two of the tournament. Tuesday will feature a 7:30-9:30 a.m. shotgun start. While GW's entire roster will make the trip and compete in the event, the lineup for who will represent the Colonials in the official lineup is being determined with qualifying play at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday and Saturday.
BASH AT THE BEACH COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL: The tournament will be played at the par-71, 6,741-yard Surf Golf & Beach Club. "It's an interesting course, in that you can't just bomb driver," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "You have to play placement golf on this course in order to give yourself the best angles. If you can get off the tee you can usually play this course pretty good. It's a course you can definitely score on."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Colonials will look to build off of their strong finish at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championships, where they won 11 of their final 12 matches to win the consolation final. "For our first event of the year to put up some of the best golf that we've played since I've been here is really encouraging, and I was really excited for where we were," said Scheinost. "This will be a great test for us in terms of heading to our first stroke play event."
THE COMPETITION: The 19-team field consists of George Mason, Belmont, Arkansas State, NC Central, West Georgia, Gardner Webb, Oakland University, Valparaiso, Western Kentucky, Appalachian State, Longwood, Tennessee Tech, James Madison, Radford, Fairleigh Dickinson, High Point, Holy cross, and St. Bonaventure. "It's a great golf course where you can shoot some good scores," said Scheinost. "It will be fun to see where we end up and how we respond."
LOOKING AHEAD: GW plays in the Desert Shootout tournament on Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19, at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, A.Z.
