CSUN 4, GW 2 | CSUN 6, GW 5 (11)
WASHINGTON - Sophomore Mark Osis totaled six hits, including a 5-for-5 effort in game two, but the George Washington baseball team was unable to pick up a win after dropping both games of a doubleheader to visiting CSUN on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (3-7) fell in game one, 4-2, before being outlasted in the nightcap, 6-5, in 11 innings.
Senior Bobby LeWarne got the start in game one, and turned in seven solid innings of work. He yielded just two earned runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
CSUN (8-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first, but junior Kevin Mahala's two-run shot in the bottom half put the Colonials ahead, 2-1. Osis beat out a two-out single on a ground ball to third base to extend the inning before Mahala blasted a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left field for his second home run of the season.
The Matadors used a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the top of the third inning. The score remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth, when CSUN plated the go-ahead run after taking advantage of a leadoff error. An insurance run came in the ninth via a sacrifice fly.
The Colonials went hitless over the final three innings.
GW raced out to a 4-0 lead in game two but faltered down the stretch as CSUN rallied to tie the score before winning, 6-5, in 11 innings.
Sophomore Robbie Metz was on the hill for the Colonials and allowed three runs over 6.1 innings.
GW got right to work in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Joey Bartosic led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Osis. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by junior Andrew Selby and Mahala provided a RBI groundout to put the Colonials ahead 1-0.
GW added to the lead in the fifth inning by plating three runs on three hits. Metz led off the frame with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice by junior Eli Kashi. Bartosic was then hit by a pitch before Osis lifted a RBI double down the left field line. Selby followed with a bunt single RBI, ahead of Mahala who tacked on another run on a groundout.
CSUN started its comeback in the sixth inning on a RBI double by Albee Weiss. Two more runs came across in the seventh when the Matadors tagged Metz for two runs on five hits. Junior Luke Olson entered in relief with one out and the bases loaded and retired the side to preserve the 4-3 lead.
The Colonials got an insurance run in the seventh when Osis led off with a double and scored when Mahala followed with a two-bagger of his own, extending the lead to 5-3.
The Matadors plated single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to force extras. In the eighth, CSUN got a RBI single by Elias Orona. In the ninth, a one-out error extended the inning and the Matadors took advantage as Nolan Bumstead tied the game later in the frame on a RBI groundout.
The Colonials had a chance to walk off with the victory in the bottom of the ninth. Osis led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Selby. After an intentional walk to Mahala, junior Bobby Campbell reached on a fielder's choice. Mahala was forced out on the double play attempt but Campbell was safe at first. During the sequence, Osis rounded third and attempted to score but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
CSUN scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th. Osis hit a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th but was stranded to end the game.
Junior Jordan Sheinkop was the hard-luck loser in relief, yielding an earned run over 1.1 innings of work.
Osis finished 6-for-8 (.750) in the doubleheader with three runs, one double and one RBI. Mahala led the Colonials with five RBIs with his two hits coming via home run and a double.
GW will look to avoid the sweep in game three on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
