LEADING OFF: The George Washington baseball team opens the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule when it hosts La Salle for a three-game series this weekend at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
A-10 OPENERS UNDER RITCHIE: GW is 2-1 in its Atlantic 10 openers under fourth-year head coach Gregg Ritchie. The Colonials beat Saint Joseph's on the road, 2-1, in last season's opener and downed Massachusetts, 4-1, in the first game of a sweep in 2013. The Colonials are 39-27 (.591) overall in A-10 games under Coach Ritchie.
DOUBLE UP: GW ranks second in the Atlantic 10 with 45 doubles on the season. Junior Kevin Mahala leads both the Atlantic 10 and NCAA Division I with 14 doubles. Junior Bobby Campbell also boasts a double-digit total with 10 two-baggers.
MARK IT: Sophomore Mark Osis continues to pace the Colonials' offense with a .389 batting average, which ranks second overall in the Atlantic 10 among everyday players. He has scored a team-best 17 runs and totaled 15 RBIs, two doubles and two triples. He is also 6-for-10 in steal attempts.
MAHALA MASH: Mahala continues to lead the Colonials and rank second in the conference with 26 RBIs - a number that matches his output from all of 2015. He also leads the Colonials with 17 extra-base hits (14 doubles, one triple, two home runs) and is slugging a team-best .524.
LAST MEETING: The Colonials and Explorers last met during the 2014 season when GW took two of three games in Philadelphia. Jacob Williams threw eight innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits and a walk along with six strikeouts in GW's 2-1 game two victory.
SCOUTING LA SALLE: The Explorers were picked to finish 10th in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll. La Salle carries a 7-18 overall record into this weekend's series and is batting .202 as a team with a combined staff ERA of 6.73. The Explorers fell to Rider, 5-2, earlier this week and were swept in three games at St. John's last weekend. Jared Malone paces the offense with a .281 batting average, seven doubles and 10 RBIs in 25 games this season.
