WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take an 8-6 lead but faltered down the stretch, as UMBC came out on top in a 10-8 decision in 11 innings on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
UMBC (11-10) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after totaling four hits and three walks while taking advantage of an error in the top of the second inning. An RBI double in the top of the third extended the advantage to 6-0 before the Colonials mounted their comeback.
Junior Bobby Campbell started the rally with a leadoff single in the bottom of the third, moved to second on a base hit by junior Eli Kashi and to third on a wild pitch. With runners at the corners and one out, junior Joey Bartosic reached base on an error and Campbell scored GW's first run of the day.
A walk to sophomore Robbie Metz loaded the bases, and sophomore Mark Osis followed with a bloop RBI single to make the score 6-2. The next batter was junior Kevin Mahala, who laced a three-run double down the left field line to pull the Colonials within one run at 6-5.
The Colonials seized the lead with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks to a fielder's choice RBI by Bartosic and another RBI single by Osis.
A sacrifice fly by Kashi in the bottom of the fifth inning extended GW's lead to 8-6, but the Retrievers pulled even at 8-8 with a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI doubles in the top half of the sixth.
Both teams had chances to plate the go-ahead run in the ensuing four innings, but the deadlock would not be broken until UMBC plated two runs on two hits in the top half of the 11th to take a 10-8 lead.
GW got one runner aboard in the bottom of the 11th but was unable to mount a second comeback.
Mahala finished 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Osis (3-for-5, two RBIs) and Campbell (3-for-5, two runs) also tallied three-hit efforts for the Colonials.
GW will open Atlantic 10 Conference play when it hosts La Salle for a three-game series this weekend at Tucker Field. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
