GW Women's Hoops Beats Richmond for 20th Win

RICHMOND, Va. -- The George Washington women's basketball team reached the 20-win mark for the third year in a row with a 62-47 victory over Atlantic 10 rival Richmond on Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center.
GW improves to 20-4 on the season and remains atop the A-10 standings at 10-1 in league play while Richmond falls to 9-14 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
Sophomore Kelli Prange led all players with 15 points and added six rebounds, while junior Caira Washington tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Junior Hannah Schaible was the third Colonial in double figures with 12 points to go with six boards, and Brianna Cummings chipped in eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
Richmond's 47 points were the second-fewest scored by a GW opponent this season.
GW dominated the glass to the tune of a 46-30 rebounding advantage, winning the battle of the boards for the 24th straight game, including a 24-9 edge on the offensive end, which yielded a 20-6 margin on second-chance points.
Behind eight assists from grad student Lauren Chase, the Colonials dished out 20 assists on 26 made field goals. Freshman Mei-Lyn Bautista recorded five helpers and junior Shannon Cranshaw had four.
Bautista knocked down a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer to give the Colonials a 13-12 lead which they would not relinquish. GW opened a nine-point lead with a 10-2 run to open the second and held a 27-23 halftime advantage.
Another 10-2 spurt to start the third period made it 37-25, and the Colonials stretched their lead to 14 with 1:40 remaining. GW led by eight points with 6:30 to go in the game before pulling away with a 13-2 run, and the Colonials' lead peaked at 19 on four straight free throws by Schaible with 1:14 left.
Micaela Parson paced Richmond with 11 points, while Janelle Hubbard tallied 10.
The Colonials have the week off before hosting A-10 rival Dayton next Sunday, Feb. 14, at the Charles E. Smith Center. The noon tipoff will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
