WASHINGTON - In the 10th meeting between the George Washington and Dayton women's basketball teams in the last four seasons, GW won its fifth straight contest over the Flyers with a 72-62 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center. After sweeping three meetings with the 2015 Elite Eight team last season, the Colonials have now won both regular-season matchups again this year.
GW improves to 21-4 overall and 11-1 in Atlantic 10 play to remain tied with Duquesne (11-1) atop the conference standings. The Colonials have won 16 of their last 17 games overall since Dec. 6, while snapping Dayton's five-game winning streak.
Sophomore Kelli Prange (16 points), grad student Lauren Chase (15) and sophomore Brianna Cummings (13) scored in double figures for the Atlantic 10's top scoring team in conference play, as the Colonials hit right on their scoring average after entering the contest with a 72.8 ppg average against league foes.
The game started tight, and Dayton held a seven-point lead midway through the first quarter, but the Colonials closed on a 14-4 run, keeping Dayton off the scoreboard for nearly five minutes, to lead 18-15 after the first stanza. GW extended its lead to 38-32 at halftime, stretching a two-point advantage to six points at the break with back-to-back layups by senior Dalacy Anderson and Chase in the final 31 seconds.
The Colonials continued to build their cushion in the third, surging to a 58-44 after a triple by Anderson in the closing seconds of the frame capped a 16-5 run, as Dayton went 6:30 without a field goal in the quarter. The lead would swell to as many as 17 points early in the fourth period before settling in at the final 10-point margin, 72-62.
GW forced 20 Dayton turnovers on the day to win the turnover battle, 20-12, and parlayed that edge into a 23-7 margin in points off turnovers. GW also walloped the Flyers in bench scoring, as Cummings led the GW reserves to outscore their counterparts, 25-2.
Cummings also grabbed seven rebounds for GW to tie for team-high honors. Junior Caira Washington also snared seven boards to give her 778 in her career, ninth on GW's all-time list and just seven behind Ugo Oha ('04) - who will be inducted into GW's Athletic Hall of Fame next Saturday.
The Colonials made their first 13 free throws in the game and finished at 16-for-20 (80 percent) on the day behind perfect games from Chase (5-for-5) and junior Hannah Schaible (4-for-4).
Jenna Burdette scored a game-high 23 points for the Flyers, while Lauren Cannatelli poured in 19 points. The Colonials held Dayton to 34.6 percent (18-for-52) from the field.
GW now leads the all-time series with Dayton, 30-8, including 14-2 at the Smith Center.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday when they visit St. Bonaventure for a big A-10 matchup. GW currently holds a two-game lead over the third-place Bonnies (9-3) in the conference standings. Tipoff from the Reilly Center is set for 7 p.m.
