BURLINGTON, N.C. -- GW sophomore golfer Logan Lowe is in contention at the Elon Phoenix Invitational after playing the first two rounds 9-under par on Monday at the Alamance Country Club.
Lowe is just one shot behind Jose Montano of North Carolina, who is 10-under. The native of Grass Valley, California shot 67 in round one before firing a 66 in round two.
"I was really happy with the way I hit the ball today," said Lowe. "I put myself in good position off the tee, which allowed me to be aggressive with my iron play, hit greens and have a lot of good looks. My putting finally came around the last couple weeks and I started knocking in a few mid-range putts which were big momentum boosts during the round."
In round one, Lowe recorded seven birdies against three bogeys, and played his final nine holes of the round at 4-under par for his 67. He picked up right where he left off as round two got underway, playing the first three holes 4-under par, with an eagle on the par 5 sixth hole. After a few hiccups on the back 9, Lowe birdied his final two holes of the day to get within a shot of Montano.
"Overall I'm pretty happy with the way I played," said Lowe. "I'm very excited about tomorrow - this is the closest I've been to the lead in a college event. Obviously what I did today worked pretty well so I'm going to stick with my gameplan of fairways and greens. From what I know it's going to be a pretty tough setup tomorrow so I want to make sure I'm hitting to the center of the green and relying on my short game to get everything done."
As a team, GW is tied for 12th at 8-over par while Gardner-Webb leads at 10-under. Junior Vince Palazzolo (72-74=146), redshirt junior Christian Cichan (73-74=147), and seniors Lucas Farmer (77-74=151) and Michael Heda (76-76=152) rounded out the scoring for the Colonials.
Lowe is set to tee off at 9:52 a.m. on Tuesday, and live stats can be followed here.
