WASHINGTON - Behind a balanced scoring effort that saw five Colonials score in double figures, the George Washington women's basketball team routed Atlantic 10 rival La Salle, 83-59, on Wednesday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center.
With the victory, GW (14-3, 4-0 A-10) extended its winning streak to nine while running its win streak over A-10 foes to 12 in a row.
Senior Jonquel Jones, the reigning A-10 and National Player of the Week, registered her 14th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds, eclipsing her nation's best 15.2 rebound-per-game average while adding another double-double to her tops-in-the-country mark. Seven of Jones' 16 boards came on the offensive end, and the two-way force also swatted four La Salle shots on defense.
Jones' frontcourt mate, junior Caira Washington netted 10 points and grabbed eight boards, as the A-10's leading rebounding duo keyed a GW effort on the glass that matched its nation-high 52.1 rebound-per-game average with another 53 caroms against the Explorers. The Colonials have now won the battle of the boards in all 17 games this season, as they held a 53-39 advantage on the glass, including 22-12 on the offensive end.
Junior Hannah Schaible led GW in scoring with 14 points on an efficient 6-of-9 from the floor while adding five rebounds and three steals. Grad student Lauren Chase (10 points, 5-of-9 shooting) and senior Dalacy Anderson (10 points, 5-of-7 shooting) also reached double figures in the scoring column.
The Colonials did all the dirty work in the paint with a 44-18 scoring edge inside while also forcing 19 La Salle turnovers, cashing those in for 20 points on the other end. GW outran the Explorers to the tune of a 16-2 tally in fast break points and enjoyed 36 bench points compared to La Salle's 17, with freshman Mei-Lyn Bautista (nine points) remaining hot from outside in a reserve role with a 3-for-3 night from behind the arc. Bautista also dished five assists without committing a turnover, while Chase had a game-high eight dimes for the Colonials.
Leading by one with 1:13 remaining in the first quarter, Bautista knocked down a three and Jones made a layup and-one to put the Colonials up 17-10 after the opening period. GW extended the run to 17-0 with the first 11 points of the second stanza and outscored La Salle, 26-13, in the period for a 20-point halftime advantage, 43-23. After another dominant quarter in which the Colonials outscored the Explorers, 24-11, GW's lead peaked at 37 points, 71-34, on a layup by Jones with 8:19 remaining in the fourth.
Amy Griffin paced La Salle with 16 points and seven rebounds, but she did all of her damage in the fourth quarter as the Colonials held the A-10's leading scorer without a point for the first 30 minutes of the game. Michaya Owens added 14 points and Jasmine Alston had 12.
With the win, GW improves to 33-5 all-time against La Salle, including a 15-2 mark at the Smith Center.
After topping Dayton in its previous road game, up next for GW is another huge A-10 clash on Sunday at No. 25 Duquesne. The game will be nationally televised at 12 p.m. on ESPNU, the fourth of GW's first five conference games that will be contested in front of a national TV audience.
