DAYTON, Ohio - For the fourth time since the start of 2015, the GW women's basketball team (13-3, 3-0 A-10) defeated the Dayton Flyers (8-6, 1-2 A-10) on Sunday afternoon, this time in comeback fashion on the road against the 2015 Elite Eight participant.
Dayton led by as many as 15 points on its homecourt in the second half, before a furious GW rally on the strength of a 16-1 third quarter run knotted the score at 44 apiece with 3:34 to play in the third quarter. From there the game stayed close throughout, and GW survived a Flyers' go-ahead field goal try in the closing seconds before the nation's leading rebounder, Jonquel Jones, grabbed her game-high 15th board of the contest to seal the GW win. After downing Dayton in all three match-ups a season ago, the Colonials earned a leg up in the rivalry in the new year by taking the first of two meetings against their rival in the regular season this year.
Jones led the way for GW in victory with another double-double, registering a game-high 23 points along with her 15 boards. Frontcourt mate Caira Washington also sprung for double figures for the the Colonials with 17 points, including her 1,000th career point.
GW trailed 20-14 after the first quarter and 38-26 at halftime, but much like the A-10 Championship game from a season ago, the Colonials saved their best for the second half and rallied early in the opening minutes out of the halftime break. A 23-10 GW edge in the third quarter allowed for the fourth quarter 13-13 stalemate to give the Buff and Blue the one-point decision.
Lauren Chase and Hannah Schaible each registered a game-high six assists to direct a GW attack that assisted on 20 of 26 successful field goals. As usual, the nation's leading rebounding team won the battle of the boards, as GW's 52 rebounds virtually matched its 52.1 rebounds per game average, and topped the Flyers' 41 boards. 20 GW offensive rebounds (five from Jones) also led to a 17-6 advantage in second chance points.
The versatile national player of the year candidate and defending A-10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Jones, showed her all-around chops again by also contributing a pair of three-pointers in three tries, while swatting two Dayton shots, grabbing a steal, connecting on 5-of-6 at the charity stripe and logging a game-high 38 minutes (tied with Chase).
Dayton's Celeste Edwards (team-high 14 points, eight rebounds), Saicha Grant-Allen (10 points, team-high nine rebounds) and Jenna Burdette (12 points) were the three Flyers to reach double figures in scoring.
Up next for the Colonials is a Wednesday night home date with La Salle at 7:00 pm at the Charles E. Smith Center.
