WASHINGTON -- The George Washington golf team makes its Fall 2015 debut at the Rutgers Invitational this weekend.
The 54-hole season-opening event will be played on the 6,300-yard, par-71 Rutgers University Golf Course in Piscataway, New Jersey, with two rounds on Friday and the final round on Saturday. GW will be joined by Atlantic 10 rival La Salle and the host Scarlet Knights' `A' and `B' teams, as well as Fairleigh Dickinson, Iona, Lehigh, Manhattan, Monmouth, Rider, Saint Peter's, Savannah State, Towson and Wagner.
Two players will make their debut with the Colonials, as junior Christian Cichan, a transfer from Purdue, and freshman Logan Lowe will tee it up for the first time as collegians. They will be joined by sophomores Vince Palazzolo and Jack Porcelli and junior Lucas Farmer. The four remaining Colonials -- seniors Michael Helton, Steve Piela and Pierre Tillement and junior Michael Heda -- will also compete this weekend as individuals.
"Rutgers is going to be a unique tournament for us," said third-year head coach Chuck Scheinost. "One of the main focuses of our entire schedule this year is experience building, getting our guys a lot of events. Every one of our players is going to play in this first tournament of the year, get some experience, and that will help us in figuring out who is going to play a little later this fall."
Three Colonials who hail from New Jersey -- Palazzolo, Piela and Porcelli -- will be celebrating a homecoming at this weekend's tournament.
With the graduation of two-time A-10 All-Conference performer Jack Persons, Palazzolo represents the Colonials' top returner after posting a 75.56 season scoring average -- second-lowest on the team -- over 27 rounds in his rookie campaign. GW finished in ninth place at the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship, posting a pair of sub-300 rounds -- including two of its four lowest rounds of the season -- in the three-round event.
