WASHINGTON - Junior Bobby LeWarne earned his team-leading eighth win of the season with seven solid innings as the George Washington baseball team defeated Saint Louis, 6-4, in the opening game of a three-game series on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (29-16, 13-8 A-10) and Saint Louis (31-18, 12-7 A-10) battled through four scoreless innings before the Colonials plated a trio of runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the fifth inning to build a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Robbie Metz started the sequence with a two-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Bobby Campbell. Freshman Brandon Chapman then extended the inning by reaching on an error and sophomore Andrew Selby hit an RBI double to the gap in right-center field to put the Colonials on top, 2-0. Sophomore Colin Gibbons-Fly then followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
LeWarne worked around a one-out single to retire the side in the sixth and then used an inning-ending double play following a leadoff walk to erase a threat in the seventh.
Metz drew a one-out walk in the bottom half of the seventh inning and scored when Campbell lifted an RBI double down the left field line to make the score 4-0.
LeWarne yielded a leadoff single and an RBI double to start the eighth inning before being relieved by senior Craig LeJeune, who allowed an RBI double which pulled Saint Louis within two runs of the lead at 4-2 before retiring the side.
The Colonials added a pair of insurance runs, aided by two errors, in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 6-2. Gibbons-Fly was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then advanced to third on an error. With runners at the corners and no outs, sophomore Kevin Mahala laid down a squeeze bunt to pick up an RBI and put GW on top, 5-2. Later in the inning, Metz reached on a fielding error which allowed another insurance run to cross the plate.
Saint Louis threatened in the top of the ninth, pushing two runs across, but Lejeune earned his 11th career save and first of the season to clinch the 6-4 win for the Colonials.
Campbell finished 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored while Gibbons-Fly (2-for-3, one run, one RBI) and Mahala (2-for-3, one run, one walk, one RBI) added multi-hit efforts.
Selby's double in the fifth inning extended his current reached-base streak to 25 consecutive games.
LeWarne improved to 8-4 with the win after allowing two earned runs across seven innings of work. He allowed four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
GW and Saint Louis will play the middle game of the three-game set on Saturday afternoon. First pitch at The Tuck is scheduled for 1 p.m.
