GW Baseball Buries #16 Maryland, 12-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The George Washington baseball team posted its first win over a ranked opponent since 2008 with a 12-1 victory over No. 16 Maryland on Wednesday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
The last time the Colonials defeated a ranked opponent was a 17-5 win over No. 15 Virginia on March 26, 2008 in Charlottesville, Virginia. The win was also GW's first over Maryland since February 16, 2003.
GW (18-10) scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when sophomore Kevin Mahala connected on a RBI single to put the Colonials ahead 1-0.
Maryland (23-8) tied the score in the bottom half of the inning with its only run of the game, before GW broke the game open with four runs in the top of the third inning.
Sophomore Eli Kashi started the sequence by reaching on an error to lead off the inning. Sophomore Joey Bartosic followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second with no outs, before sophomore Bobby Campbell drew a one-out walk to load the bases.
Freshman Brandon Chapman then came to the plate and drove a two-run double to deep centerfield to put the Colonials on top, 3-1. The next batter was freshman Matt Cosentino, who lined a RBI single to right field to extend the lead to 4-1. Later in the inning, Mahala earned another RBI on a fielder's choice to push the advantage to 5-1.
The Colonials kept the pressure on in the fourth inning when Bartosic drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a RBI single by sophomore Bobby Campbell to push the lead to 6-1.
After a scoreless fifth inning, GW plated two more runs in the top of the sixth. Kashi led off with a single and then advanced to second on an infield base hit by Bartosic. Senior Ryan Xepoleas then drove a two-run double to the gap in left centerfield for a 8-1 lead.
The Colonials loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning on a single by Campbell, double by Cosentino and a walk to sophomore Andrew Selby. Campbell and Chapman both came in to score on an error on a failed pickoff attempt to make the score 10-1, before two runs scored on an error by Maryland's shortstop later in the inning for the final 12-1 tally.
Seven GW pitchers combined to limit the Terrapins to one run on eight hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts. The win went to freshman Tyler Swiggart, who got the final two outs of the third inning.
Chapman finished 3-for-4 with two runs, one double and two RBIs, while Campbell was 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
Xepoleas (two RBIs, one walk) and Mahala (two RBIs, one run) also finished with multiple RBIs.
Maryland entered the game ranked as high as No. 16 in the latest national polls. The Terrapins are No. 16 in the Baseball America National Poll, D1 Baseball National Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll and are ranked No. 21 in the Collegiate Baseball National Poll.
GW will return home to Tucker Field to open a three-game series with Dayton beginning on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
