GW Baseball Hits Road for Midweek Contests

WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team will conclude its current six-game road swing with a pair of midweek games in the state of Maryland this week. The Colonials will visit UMBC on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. before facing Maryland on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Sophomore Joey Bartosic paces the Colonials and ranks ninth in the Atlantic 10 with a .358 batting average entering this week's games. The Oakton, Virginia, native is tied for the team lead with 11 multiple-hit games this season and ranks third in the A-10 with 13 stolen bases. He also ranks third on the team with 14 RBIs.
GW entered the weekend with just three home runs as a team, all by sophomore Kevin Mahala, before erupting for four long balls across the three-game series with Massachusetts. Sophomore Andrew Selby connected on a pair of go-ahead, two-run home runs in the second and third games of the series while senior Ryan Xepoleas hit a pair of his own over the weekend to bring his career total to four.
Selby is currently batting .300 on the season with six doubles, five triples, two home runs and 15 RBIs. He is slugging a team-best .575 which ranks him seventh in the Atlantic 10.
Sophomore Eddie Muhl tallied three saves in last week's games to run his season total to 10, which leads the Atlantic 10 and is tied for fourth in the nation. The Sherman Oaks, California, native is currently ranked second in program history for single-season saves and his 11 career saves puts him in sole possession of third place in program history.
GW's pitching staff boasts a team ERA of 3.38 which ranks second in the Atlantic 10 and 54th in NCAA Division I. Freshman Robbie Metz leads the Colonials with a 1.87 ERA and 2-1 record through six starts this season.
The Colonials defeated UMBC, 6-4, last Tuesday at Tucker Field. The Retrievers swept St. Peter's over the weekend to improve to 13-10 this season.
Maryland is 22-7 this season and is ranked as high as No. 16 in this week's national polls. The Terrapins swept Nebraska over the weekend, have won their last four games and boast a perfect 11-0 record at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
GW last faced Maryland during the 2012 season, falling 8-6, in College Park, Maryland. The Colonials last defeated the Terrapins during the 2003 season by a score of 11-3.
