NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Sophomore Andrew Selby connected on a go-ahead, two-run home run for the second straight game to help the George Washington baseball team to an 8-2 victory over Massachusetts in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.
Senior Ryan Xepoleas also went deep for the second time this weekend as GW (17-9, 6-2 A-10) earned a 2-1 series victory over Massachusetts (5-10, 5-4 A-10).
Junior Luke Olson earned his first victory of the season after pitching 4.1 innings of relief out of the bullpen. He allowed just one earned run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Massachusetts used a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Colonials rebounded in the top half of the fourth on Selby's two-run blast. Freshman Brandon Chapman led off with a single through the left side of the infield and then Selby connected on a 3-1 pitch, depositing the ball over the right field wall, to put the Colonials ahead, 2-1.
The Colonials added a pair of unearned runs after a throwing error in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Eli Kashi led off the inning with an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored when sophomore Joey Bartosic reached on a throwing error. Later in the inning, Chapman provided a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-1.
The offensive outburst continued in the seventh inning as Kashi led off with a double, stole third and scored on an RBI single by Bartosic to make the score 5-1. Later in the inning, Chapman connected on an RBI double to extend the advantage to 6-1.
The Colonials plated two more runs in the eighth. First, Xepoleas connected on an 0-2 pitch for a leadoff home run over the right field wall to push the lead to 7-1. Bartosic added a sacrifice fly later in the inning for an 8-1 lead.
Senior Craig LeJeune pitched two perfect innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Tyler Swiggart pitched the ninth inning, yielding a solo home run before clinching the victory for the Colonials.
Bartosic finished 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and one stolen base while Chapman went 3-for-3 with one double, one walk and two RBIs.
Kashi also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
