WASHINGTON - Sophomore Joey Bartosic drove in three runs to lead the George Washington baseball team to a series-clinching 4-1 victory over Dayton on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW improves to 20-10 overall with the win and is 8-2 through its first 10 Atlantic 10 games for the first time since 2010.
Freshman Robbie Metz improved to 3-1 on the season with another quality start to lead the Colonials. He surrendered just one run on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts before GW's bullpen took over to shutdown Dayton (9-23, 2-9 A-10) in the final three innings. He also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles.
After a 1-2-3 first inning, Metz stranded runners on base to end each of the next four innings. He ran into trouble in the fifth after yielding consecutive two-out singles, but escaped the jam with a pickoff move to end the inning.
Sophomore Kevin Mahala led off the bottom of the fifth with a single just under Dayton's third basemen's glove and advanced to second when freshman Matt Cosentino was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before Bartosic sliced a single to the gap in right center field to plate two and put the Colonials on top, 2-0.
The Flyers scored their only run in the top of the sixth when they scored on a double play to cut the deficit to 2-1.
GW added a pair of insurance runs in the later innings. In the seventh, sophomore Eli Kashi hit a one-out single and then scored on a RBI double by Bartosic.
In the eighth inning, Mahala hit a two-out single and then came around to score when Cosentino lifted a RBI triple to deep right center field to push the lead to 4-1.
Junior Luke Olson worked two scoreless innings in relief of Metz and sophomore Eddie Muhl pitched a perfect ninth for his Atlantic 10 leading 12th save of the season. Muhl is now tied with former GW hurler Derrick Lutz for the most saves in a single-season in program history.
Bartosic finished 2-for-4 with one double and three RBIs for his team-leading 14th multiple-hit game of the season. His three RBIs also mark his sixth multiple-RBI game of the season.
GW will look for the series sweep in Sunday's finale. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Tucker Field.
