WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held off a late rally to defeat Dayton, 3-2, in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Junior Bobby LeWarne earned his team-leading sixth win of the season after allowing two runs on five hits in 7.1 innings. He did not walk a batter while registering four strikeouts.
LeWarne yielded a leadoff single in the first inning before retiring the next 11 batters in a row. He allowed a two-out single in the fourth inning but retired the side on a strikeout to end the threat.
GW (19-10, 7-2 A-10) stranded seven runners on base in the first five innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, before breaking through for three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Andrew Selby started the outburst with a leadoff double and then advanced to third base on a fielder's choice when Dayton's third basemen committed an error. With runners on the corners and one out, freshman Brandon Chapman drove a RBI double to deep left field to put the Colonials on top, 1-0.
Sophomore Eli Kashi was next up and laid down a perfect sacrifice squeeze bunt to extend the lead to 2-0, before sophomore Joey Bartosic delivered a RBI single through the left side of the infield for a 3-0 advantage.
LeWarne ran into trouble in the top of the eighth inning after yielding a leadoff double. He got the next batter out via strikeout before Dayton (9-22, 2-8 A-10) got its first run on a RBI double. Senior Craig LeJeune entered in relief and allowed a RBI double that got the Flyers within one run of the lead, but sophomore Eddie Muhl was able to record the last out of the inning on a strikeout to end the threat.
Muhl returned in the ninth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to earn his 11th save of the season.
Bartosic (2-for-4, one RBI) and Selby (2-for-4, one double, one run), along with freshman Matt Cosentino (2-for-4, one RBI, one run) and freshman Robbie Metz (2-for-4) each finished with multiple hits to lead the Colonials.
GW and Dayton will play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
