WASHINGTON - The Colonials' bullpen worked 6.1 innings of scoreless relief but the George Washington baseball team lost to Delaware State, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (10-8) left a total of nine runners on base while Delaware State (6-12) plated one run on four hits and five walks to earn the win.
The Hornets scored the only run of the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Charles Dailey.
The Colonials threatened in the bottom half of the inning but stranded runners on second and third with an inning-ending line out.
Delaware State's Terry Godfrey earned the win with a complete-game shutout. He yielded five hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
GW again threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning when freshman Brandon Champman hit a two-out double off the left field wall, but Godfrey retired the final batter to clinch the win.
Junior Shane Kemp took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in 2.2 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
Freshman Brady Renner relieved Kemp to get the last out in the top of the third and went on to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings with two walks and one strikeout.
Junior Jacob Williams pitched three perfect innings of relief with five strikeouts.
Sophomore Colin Gibbons-Fly went 2-for-3 to lead the offense.
