WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back on its way to a 10-1 win over Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Freshman Brady Renner earned his first collegiate win by pitching five shutout innings. He scattered three hits while tallying four strikeouts and two walks.
GW (9-6) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third inning to kick start what turned into a seven-run inning. Sophomore Eli Kashi led off with a single through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on a walk by sophomore Joey Bartosic. Freshman Robbie Metz then singled up the middle to load the bases.
Sophomore Bobby Campbell battled back from a 2-2 count to draw an RBI walk to put GW on top, 1-0, and sophomore Andrew Selby followed by driving his team-leading fifth triple of the season to the gap in right center field to clear the bases and put the Colonials ahead 4-0.
Later in the inning, back-to-back walks by senior Ryan Xepoleas and sophomore Kevin Mahala loaded the bases, allowing the Colonials to bat around in the inning. Kashi came to the plate again and hit an RBI single to left field to extend the lead to 5-0. The next batter was Bartosic, who dropped an RBI double into right field to push two more runs across to make the score 7-0.
Renner stranded two runners on base in the top half of the fifth inning before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Juniors Randy Dalrymple and Luke Olson, along with freshmen Chance Malek and Kevin Hodgson, combined to pitch four innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts and one walk to preserve the lead.
The Colonials scored a run on a double-play ball in the seventh and then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Campbell roped a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 10-1.
GW will open Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday afternoon when it faces Saint Joseph's in the first game of a three-game series in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
