TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior Jack Persons recorded three rounds of 74-or-better to lead the GW golf team at Florida State's ultra competitive Seminole Intercollegiate on the par-72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Club.
Persons (74-71-73) paced the Colonials with a tie for 40th in the 90-player field at 2-over-par 218, recording his team-leading ninth round of par-or-better this season with a 1-under 71 in Saturday's second round. He carded six of his team-best 11 birdies at the event during his second round 71.
GW bettered its team score every day of the three-day, 54-hole event, finishing in 17th place at 46-over 910 (307-302-301).
Host and No. 2 nationally ranked Florida State stormed back to capture the tournament title at 21-under 843 (284-288-271), erasing an eight-shot deficit with a 17-under 271 team total in Sunday's final round to overtake runner-up ETSU (-18, 846). The Buccaneers' Gudmundur Kristjansson fired three rounds in the 60s, including a first-round 9-under 63, and won medalist honors by three shots at 17-under 199.
Freshman Vince Palazzolo totaled nine birdies en route to a tie for 62nd at 8-over 224 (74-75-75). Junior Michael Helton tied for 81st at 17-over 233 (79-76-78) and sophomores Lucas Farmer (21-over 237, 82-80-75) and Michael Heda (23-over 239, 80-80-79) finished in 86th and tied for 88th, respectively.
GW will take a two-week break from competition before heading to Wilmington, North Carolina, for UNCW's Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall on March 29-30.
