GW Baseball Falls to Long Beach State, 6-0

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Robbie Metz pitched seven shutout innings but a late rally allowed Long Beach State to defeat the George Washington baseball team, 6-0, on Wednesday evening at Blair Field.
Metz, going toe-to-toe with Long Beach State (10-7) ace Kyle Friedrichs, allowed just four hits and struck out eight without walking a batter. The reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week battled out of multiple jams and retired the final 11 batters he faced in order.
Friedrichs was equally as dominant in the no-decision, throwing six shutout innings on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
GW (7-4) had a leadoff hit by sophomore Kevin Mahala erased on a double-play ball during a hit-and-run attempt in the third inning and later had a runner picked off second base with one out in the sixth.
The Dirtbags broke the deadlock with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a one-run lead and used a two-out error to tack on five additional runs for a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Colonials had an opportunity to plate a run in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs, but Long Beach State escaped the jam to clinch the victory.
Tanner Brown earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one walk and struck out three. Sophomore Eddie Muhl took the loss after allowing six runs, with only one earned due to the error, and two walks.
Sophomore Joey Bartosic had his program-record 24-game hit streak snapped in the loss.
GW will open a three-game series at Cal State Northridge on Friday afternoon. First pitch from Matador Field is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast live on gwradio.com.
