WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team will compete in the state of California for the first time since the 2000 season this week when it plays four games, beginning on Wednesday evening against Long Beach State at Blair Field at 6:00 p.m. ET.
GW is off to its best start since the 1983 season with a 7-3 mark through its first 10 games. The Colonials went 3-1 in last week, earning the season sweep over Georgetown before taking two out of three from Manhattan.
Freshman Robbie Metz earned his third Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award on Monday after batting .571 with multiple hits in all four games last week. He also earned his first collegiate win on the mound in GW's 5-1 win over Georgetown, pitching seven innings of one-run ball.
Metz leads GW with a .415 batting average and shares the team lead with four doubles and six stolen bases. He has hit safely in all 10 games this season with multiple hits in seven contests.
Junior Bobby LeWarne was also honored by the Atlantic 10, earning his second career Pitcher of the Week Award. LeWarne, who shared the honor with Saint Louis' Zach Girrens, earned his third win of the season with seven innings of one-run ball and seven strikeouts against Manhattan on Saturday.
LeWarne is a perfect 3-0 this season with a 2.70 ERA and 20 strikeouts against just three walks.
Sophomore Joey Bartosic extended his program-record hit streak to 24 consecutive games with hits in all four games last week. He currently ranks second on the team batting .400 and is a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts.
Sophomore Eddie Muhl's scoreless-innings streak is now up to 18.2 innings after he earned the save in Saturday's win over Manhattan.
Wednesday marks the first-ever contest between GW and Long Beach State. The Dirtbags are 9-6 this season after dropping two-of-three at Arizona State last weekend and will host San Diego State on Tuesday evening.
GW fell to Cal State Northridge in the only meeting between the two teams in 2002. The Matadors are off to an 11-4 start this season and will face Cal State Bakersfiled on Tuesday evening.
