WASHINGTON - Senior Jonquel Jones recorded her second 20-point, 20-rebound effort in three games and topped 1,000 points for her career, but the George Washington women's basketball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 64-60, on Thursday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center.
After breaking GW's single-game rebounding record with 26 against Iowa last Friday, Jones became the first Colonial to record multiple 20-rebound games in the same season since Marise James in 1976-77. It marked the 12th 20-rebound game in program history. The preseason Wooden Award candidate also surpassed Anna Montañana for 10th place on GW's all-time list with 751 in her career as a Colonial.
Entering the game needing four points to reach 1,000 for her career, Jones hit her milestone on a three-point play with 1:05 left in the opening quarter. She finished with 21 points on 10-of-21 from the floor for her sixth straight double-double and added four blocks, three steals and two assists.
Junior Caira Washington added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Colonials, who saw a 15-game winning streak at the Smith Center come to an end. Graduate student Lauren Chase matched a season high with seven assists to go with nine points.
GW (5-3) enjoyed a 2-to-1 advantage on the boards (54-27) but was unable to overcome FGCU's hot shooting from beyond the arc, as the Eagles (4-3) knocked down 12-of-29 three-pointers (41.4 percent) on the evening.
The Colonials rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to take a 44-40 lead after three quarters by shooting 60 percent (9-for-15) in the period and outscoring FGCU, 20-10.
GW held a 52-43 advantage following Jones' layup with 5:44 remaining, but FGCU scored nine straight points to tie it up with 4:10 left. The Colonials regained a four-point lead on back-to-back buckets by Washington and Chase, but the Eagles again battled back to tie it at 58-58.
Jones gave GW its last lead, 60-58, with 1:26 remaining before Taylor Gradinjan knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Eagles ahead for good, and Kaneisha Atwater made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the four-point victory for the visitors.
Atwater posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead FGCU, and Gradinjan scored 16 points on 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, when they visit Memphis at 2 p.m. ET.
