WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team will host nine matches as part of a robust 21-match spring 2016 slate, head coach Greg Munoz announced.
The Colonials wrapped the 2014-15 season with a 5-12 spring mark after taking on a pair of nationally ranked opponents and advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 Championships. Sophomore Teodora Radosavljevic finished a stellar rookie campaign with a squad best 19-10 solo record to earn All-Conference First Team honors.
"We are excited to challenge some local teams including Maryland, George Mason, Georgetown and VCU this spring," said Coach Munoz. "We'll also head out west to face Santa Clara, San Francisco and Pacific, and challenge ourselves with top programs such as FIU and Georgia State."
GW opens the dual-match season at home at the indoor Southeast Tennis and Learning Center (SETLC) as Navy comes to town on Sunday, Jan. 24, before GW takes a short trip to District rival Howard on Friday, Jan. 29. The Buff and Blue will then host UMBC indoors on Friday, Feb. 5.
The Colonials visit Towson on Friday, Feb. 12, before returning home to host Norfolk State at the SETLC on Saturday, Feb. 14.
After a week without competition, GW heads to Georgia State on Saturday, Feb. 20, to face FIU, then will take on the host Panthers on Sunday, Feb. 21.
GW takes on its first Atlantic 10 opponents of the season when Davidson and Saint Louis visit the SETLC on Sunday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 5, respectively.
During spring break, the Colonials head west for a trio of matches, beginning at Santa Clara (March 13). GW then visits the University of San Francisco (March 15) and wraps up the west coast swing on Saturday, March 19 at Pacific.
The Colonials play the first of four scheduled outdoor home matches in doubleheader action on Friday, March 25, as A-10 opponent Richmond and UMES travel to the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus. GW visits James Madison on March 26, to close a busy weekend of competition.
The Buff and Blue then head to Old Dominion (April 2), a squad that finished the 2014-15 season with the ITA's No. 56 ranking, and the first of two opponents on GW's schedule who finished last year in the top-75. The next day, the Colonials visit defending A-10 champion VCU.
GW wraps its 2016 home season with a pair of bouts at the GW Tennis Center on Saturday, April 9, and Sunday, April 10, as A-10 foe Duquesne and cross-town rival Georgetown visit campus, respectively.
The Colonials close the regular season on the road, first visiting Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Friday, April 15, before heading to Maryland the next day. The Terps finished the 2015 spring season with a No. 67 ITA ranking.
"We're looking to return to full health after last year's injuries to make a push for a top-75 ranking this season," said Coach Munoz. "I feel our women have grown a lot mentally and physically. They want a conference title badly. This year we focus on staying healthy with hopes of making some history one match at a time."
