THIS WEEK: The George Washington golf team heads to Sapphire, N.C., for its final competition of the fall season at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina. The Colonials will be represented by Christian Cichan, Logan Lowe, Vince Palazzolo, Michael Heda and Lucas Farmer.
FORMAT: 36 holes (18 Sunday, 18 Monday). Teams will tee off beginning at 9:25 both days. Live stats are not available for the tournament though recaps will be posted on GWsports.com.
HUMMINGBIRD INTERCOLLEGIATE: The tournament will be held at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. A field of 66 golfers is expected.
THE COMPETITION: The 11-team field consists of host Western Carolina, Belmont, Brevard, Colgate, Elon, Marshall, USC-Beaufort, Cardinal Stritch, Wingate and Wofford.
LOOKING BACK: "We're doing a better job of thinking about the golf course and making better decisions," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "I really saw that at UTEP because there were a lot of pins that were tucked just over bunkers and trouble areas, and we hit it to the middle of the green to give ourselves birdie chances. That was good from my standpoint to see them learn that - have it click why we are trying to hit it to certain spots.
"I'm pleased with the things I saw that we've been reinforcing to our guys, which is smart play, being aggressive in the right spots, and taking advantage of the Par 5's," said Scheinost. "Last weekend we played the Par 5's at 14-under and we could've played them a lot better than that. The fact that we made 47 birdies and an eagle was great - obviously the leading teams made more. If we could've eliminated some double bogies we would have been right in the middle of the field, and if we changed a couple of the bogies to pars we could have been even closer."
TOP ROOKIE, AGAIN: An impressive first semester in the freshman campaign of Logan Lowe continued as he earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the second time. The league announced Lowe as the top performing rookie on Thursday, after he shot an even-par 216 in the 54-hole Price's Give `Em Five Invitational at UTEP last weekend. He also earned the honor after the season-opening Rutgers Invitational.
