WASHINGTON - Four Colonials scored in double figures, led by junior Jonquel Jones' eighth double-double of the season, as the George Washington women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 12 straight games with a 77-67 victory over Atlantic 10 rival Richmond on Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW improves to 14-2 on the season, matching the best 16-game start in program history. The Colonials also move to 3-0 in A-10 play for the second straight season. The 12-game winning streak is the longest in eight years and equals the fifth-longest ever at GW.
Jones totaled 21 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double in the last seven games and her eighth of the season. The Naismith Trophy candidate connected on 9-of-14 attempts from the floor and added three assists and three blocks.
Senior Chakecia Miller tallied a season-high 16 points to go with six assists and four steals, as she moved into sole possession of seventh place all-time at GW with 246 steals in her career. Sophomore Caira Washington posted 14 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore Hannah Schaible was the fourth Colonial in double figures with 10 points.
GW, which never trailed in the game, jumped out to a 13-4 lead just over four minutes into play. After Richmond (9-6, 1-2 A-10) pulled within four, the Colonials stretched their lead back to 10 on a three-point play by Jones at the 11:19 mark. The Spiders countered with an 11-1 run that tied the game at 26-26 with 5:44 to play, but Jones responded with back-to-back baskets to regain the lead for GW, which held a 37-33 advantage at the break.
Richmond tied the game for the final time at 41-41 with six straight points early in the second half, but a 10-2 Colonials spurt gave GW an eight-point lead, 51-43, with 14:43 remaining. The Spiders kept chipping away, getting as close as two points twice, and a three-pointer by Lauren Tolson made it 57-54 with 9:07 to go.
That was the last field goal Richmond would make, however, for seven-and-a-half minutes, as a decisive 14-3 GW surge, culminating with eight straight points, gave the Colonials a game-high 14-point lead, 71-57, with 3:25 left. The Spiders would not get closer than nine the rest of the way, as GW made six straight free throws in the final 71 seconds to seal the 77-67 victory.
GW outrebounded Richmond, 43-30, including 17-7 on the offensive glass for a 15-4 advantage in second-chance points, to win the battle of the boards for the 15th time in 16 games this season. The Colonials, who shot 46.4 percent in the game, also topped 20 assists for the third time in the last four games with 21 helpers on 32 made field goals.
Janelle Hubbard led Richmond with 19 points to go with seven rebounds while Tolson tallied 18 points. GW held the Spiders, who entered the game third in the A-10 in three-point percentage, to just 4-of-18 from beyond the arc.
The Colonials return to action on Thursday when they visit A-10 rival Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
