GW Baseball Falls to UMBC, 8-2

ARLINGTON, Va. - Junior Ryan Xepoleas and senior Owen Beightol each extended their respective hit streaks, but the George Washington baseball team fell to visiting UMBC, 8-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
Xepoleas' infield single in the eighth inning extended his streak to 12 straight games, and he has now hit safely in 19 of the past 20 contests. Beigthol pushed his streak to nine games by going 2-for-5 on the day.
GW (13-24) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by freshman Bobby Campbell, but UMBC (12-18) scored once in the second and twice in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Retrievers took advantage of a trio of Colonial errors to plate three unearned runs to extend their advantage to 6-1.
GW's second run came in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by freshman Eli Kashi.
UMBC got an RBI double in the sixth and a solo home run in the ninth by Jake Barnes to extend its lead to 8-2.
Freshman Brandon Ritchie took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work. Sophomore Max Kaplow allowed four runs (one earned) on one hit in 3.2 innings of relief and senior Luke Staub added three innings of relief with one earned run and three strikeouts.
GW returns to action on Tuesday afternoon with a 3 p.m. game at UMES. The Colonials defeated the Red Hawks, 3-2, in the season opener on Feb. 19.
