WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team hits the road for its first away contests in over a month for a three-game series at defending Atlantic 10 Champion Saint Louis this weekend at Billiken Sports Complex in Saint Louis, Mo.
GW (7-13, 1-2 A-10) picked up its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season in Sunday's 4-3 win over Saint Joseph's. Trailing 3-0 entering the later innings, GW's offense took advantage of three Saint Joseph's errors to score four runs and got three shutout innings of relief from the bullpen to earn a come-from-behind victory.
GW is the only team in Division I to start at least seven freshmen in half of its games to date. Freshmen Joey Bartsoic, Cody Bryant, Bobby Campbell, Colin Gibbons-Fly, Eli Kashi, Kevin Mahala and Andrew Selby have each started at least 10 of the Colonials' 20 contests.
Senior Owen Beightol paces the Colonials with a .319 batting average along with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs, while Campbell ranks second on the team with a .302 batting average in addition to a team-best nine RBIs.
GW's pitching staff ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 with a staff ERA of 4.42. Senior Colin Milon has a 0.59 ERA in nine appearances this season, while starters Bobby LeWarne (1-2, 2.89 ERA, 24 K), Jacob Williams (2-2, 3.38 ERA, 10 K) and Aaron Weisberg (0-4, 4.11 ERA, 22 K) anchor the weekend rotation.
The Colonials are 5-8 in the all-time series against the Billikens with the latest meeting coming in the final four of last year's Atlantic 10 Championship bracket. GW defeated Rhode Island, 5-4, in the bottom of the ninth inning to advance to face Saint Louis before bowing out of the tournament in a 13-4 loss.
Saint Louis (14-9, 3-0 A-10) swept Rhode Island last weekend to open the A-10 portion of its schedule. The Billikens are 6-2 at home this season and are led on offense by 2013 A-10 Player of the Year Mike Vigliarolo, who is currently batting .348 with eight doubles, three home runs and 20 RBIs.
