ARLINGTON, Va. - Four players recorded multiple-hit games but it was not enough as the George Washington baseball team fell to Georgetown, 7-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
GW (6-11) played the game as the visiting team after the game was relocated to Arlington, Va., due to unplayable field conditions at Georgetown's (8-10) Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
The Colonials struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After consecutive hits from freshmen Cody Bryant and Bobby Campbell to leadoff the frame, a walk to sophomore Matthieu Robert loaded the bases. Bryant then scored on a fielder's choice RBI by freshman Eli Kashi, giving the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
Georgetown tied the game in the bottom of the second with a bases-loaded walk and used a two-run home run by AC Carter to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Hoyas added another run in the third on an infield single RBI by Evan Ryan, extending the advantage to 4-1, and then a two-run single by Jake Kuzbel pushed the score to 6-1.
The Colonials got one run back in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Colin Gibbons-Fly led off by reaching second base on a throwing error and then scored on a RBI single by Bryant to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Gibbons-Fly pulled the Colonials within three at 6-3 with a RBI single in the top of the eighth, but the Hoyas responded with a RBI single by Justin Abbott, pushing the lead back to 7-3 in the bottom half of the inning.
The Colonials loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning via a base hit by senior Owen Beightol, a walk by Bryant and an error. Robert followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to right left field to make the score 7-4 and a two-run single by Kevin Mahala cut the deficit to one run at 7-6.
A base hit by junior Ryan Xepoleas, which advanced Mahala to third base, extended the rally but a strikeout ended game.
Gibbons-Fly (2-for-4, one RBI), Bryant (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI), Kashi (2-for-5, one RBI) and Mahala (2-for-5, two RBIs) each finished with multiple hits for the Colonials.
GW opens Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a three-game series against Saint Joseph's at Barcroft Park. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
