WASHINGTON - Naismith Trophy candidate Jonquel Jones posted her second straight double-double to lead the George Washington women's basketball team to its seventh straight victory, 70-52, over Saint Mary's (Calif.) on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW improves to 9-2 on the season and 6-1 at home. The Colonials continue to match the 2006-07 Sweet 16 squad for their best start in eight years.
Jones led all players with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, while sophomore Caria Washington scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added eight boards. Senior Chakecia Miller tallied 10 points, five assists and three steals, and sophomore Hannah Schaible stuffed the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists and three blocked shots.
In a matchup of two of the top rebounding teams in the country - GW entered the game ranked fifth in the nation in rebounding margin (+15.9 rpg) while Saint Mary's was 11th (+12.2 rpg) - the Colonials maintained their dominance on the boards, outrebounding the Gaels, 45-27.
Saint Mary's (7-4) led for much of the first half and was up, 23-19, with 8:23 remaining, but a Jones jumper on the Colonials' next possession ignited a 13-1 run that gave GW control. GW held the Gaels without a field goal for more than six minutes before Alia McCoy's layup with 2:19 to go. The Colonials' surge reached 21-7 as they took a 40-30 lead at the break.
Jones scored eight straight points for GW early in the second half, but the Gaels pulled within nine, 46-37, just under five minutes into the period. After the Colonials regained a 15-point advantage, Saint Mary's leading scorer Lauren Nicholson drained a three-pointer and hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 10.
GW, however, responded with a 10-1 run, punctuated by back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Mia Farmer, and a fastbreak layup by Miller following a steal by Washington gave the Colonials a game-high 19-point lead, 64-45, with 6:09 left.
Nicholson was the only Gael to reach double figures in scoring, as she finished with 15 points.
With her five assists in the game, Miller became the 18th Colonial ever with 300 helpers in her career.
After a weeklong hiatus for the holidays, GW wraps up non-conference action with a pair of regional road games at Loyola (Dec. 28) and Towson (Dec. 31).
