WASHINGTON - Four Colonials scored in double figures as the George Washington women's basketball team cruised to an 88-45 victory over Bowie State in its home opener on Wednesday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center.
All 13 Colonials to see the court scored at least two points, led by sophomore Caira Washington with 13, while freshmen Mia Farmer and Brianna Cummings scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Farmer drained three 3-pointers, and Cummings pulled down seven rebounds. Senior Chakecia Miller also scored 10 points and added four assists, and senior Lauren Chase stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, 10 assists and five steals. In addition, freshman Kelli Prange finished with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
GW (2-1) raced out to 22-6 lead after just over four minutes of play, connecting on nine of its first 10 shots of the game. Bowie State (1-2) responded with an 11-2 run to pull within seven, 24-17, with 11:43 remaining in the period, but a three-pointer by Farmer at the 10:33 mark ignited a 28-6 surge to end the half, including 17 straight points in a four-and-a-half-minute stretch which featured two more triples by Farmer. The Colonials led, 52-23, at the break.
Bowie State rallied with a 9-1 spurt early in the second half but never got closer than 24 points, 56-32, at the 14:46 mark, as GW answered with a 15-4 run of its own to take a 71-36 lead and finished with 10 of the game's final 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs shot just 25 percent in the period and 29.3 percent for the game.
GW outrebounded Bowie State, 51-43, and forced the Lady Bulldogs into 28 turnovers, which led to 31 points. The Colonials assisted on 23 of 30 field goals in the game, led by Chase's 10 - her fourth career double-digit assist effort and first at GW.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday when they host No. 9/8 Maryland at 3:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the game, which will be televised regionally by Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.
