Fordham Outlasts Baseball In Extra Innings, 5-4

BRONX, NY- For the second day in a row the George Washington baseball team suffered a walk-off loss as Fordham scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to knock off the Colonials, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Houlihan Park.
Freshman Owen Beightol's sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning gave starter Brian Derner a 1-0 lead, and GW (10-25, 3-5 A-10) added two more in the top of the fourth with a RBI singles from junior Ollie Mittag and junior Brett Bowers to extend the lead to 3-0.
Fordham (21-13, 5-3) scored four runs in the bottom half of fourth using RBI doubles from Ryan Lee and Ryan Maghini to take a 4-3 lead.
The Colonials rallied to tie the game by manufacturing a run in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Brett Bowers started the inning by reaching on an error. He moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from Beightol and advanced to third on a wild pitch during senior Brendon Kelliher's at-bat, in which he walked. Junior Stephen Oswald followed with a RBI single to tie the game 4-4.
The game moved to extra innings and GW was able to load the bases with no outs, using three consecutive singles from junior Jimmy Best, sophomore Kyle Gelling and Mittag. Fordham's Jonathan Reich came on in relief and escaped the jam with a strike out and a line out.
Sophomore Kenny O'Brien was strong in relief, pitching four shutout innings before allowing the game winning run to cross the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning, a RBI single by Tim Swatek.
The two teams combined for 28 hits and Fordham walked off with the victory for the second day in a row, following Friday's 8-7 nine-inning opener. Six Colonials starters recorded multi-hit games.
The Colonials and Rams will play the final game of this three-game series on Sunday at noon. RHP Tommy Gately, the recipient of the 2011 Jackie Robinson Award, will take the mound against Fordham's Max Krakowiak.
