GW Baseball Visits No. 1 Virginia On Tuesday Afternoon

WASHINGTON, DC- The George Washington baseball team, fresh off their first Atlantic 10 victory over the season, will travel to Charlottesville, VA for an out of conference contest with No. 1 Virginia on Tuesday evening at Davenport Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
Senior RHP Tommy Gately (2-2, 4.32 ERA) will take the ball for GW (7-17, 1-2 A-10) against RHP Will Roberts (4-0, 1.47 ERA).
The Colonials snapped a seven-game losing streak with a decisive 10-5 win over Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader. Senior Joe Richardson was dominant in relief, allowing just three hits while striking out three over four and two-third innings. Sophomore Tyler McCarthy paced the Colonial offense going 4-for-5 with one homerun, five RBI and a stolen base.
Junior Stephen Oswald leads the Colonials with a .406 batting average. He has reached base safely in 18 consecutive games including a six-game hit streak. Oswald currently ranks first in the Atlantic 10 with an on base percentage of .500 and fourth in slugging percentage (.594).
GW and Virginia met last season in Charlottesville on February 24 with the Cavaliers prevailing 5-2. McCarthy was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Brendon Kelliher was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Virginia leads the all-time series 11-6.
The Colonials last defeated Virginia on March 26, 2008 by a score of 17-5. At the time Virginia was the No. 15 ranked team in the country. Kelliher was the only Colonial on the current roster to play in that game, going 1-for-4 with a two-run homerun.
The last time the Colonials faced the No. 1 team in the country was February of 2006 when they were swept in a three-game series by Georgia Tech.
Scouting Virginia
Virginia (24-2, 8-1 ACC) enters Tuesday's conference ranked No. 1 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 2 in the Baseball America Poll.
The Cavaliers are currently hitting .297 as a team and are paced by John Hicks who leads the team with a .383 average with three homeruns and 24 RBI. Virginia also posts a 2.00 team ERA while probable starter Will Roberts has struck out 31 batters in 30.2 innings.
