NEW ORLEANS, LA- The George Washington baseball team led 4-1 after six innings but were unable to hold off a late Tulane rally, falling 5-4 in the series opener on Friday evening at Turchin Stadium.
GW (2-3) starter Brian Derner gave up just one earned run in six and one-third innings while striking out three batters. However, the bullpen was unable to maintain the lead as the Green Wave tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth innings to steal the win.
The Colonials jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Paul Pakan led off with a double. Pakan would steal third base and later score on a RBI bunt single by Brett Bowers.
Ollie Mittag provided a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning. A defensive lapse by Tulane would amount to two more runs crossing the plate for GW, extending the lead to 4-1 at the end of the frame.
Tulane would plate a run in the bottom of the seventh after an error in the GW outfield. The error would extend the inning, as Jeremy Schaffer would connect for an RBI single to cut the Colonials lead to 4-3.
Garrett Cannizaro would add an RBI triple in the eighth to tie the game and Tulane would later score the winning run on an RBI single by Nick Boullosa.
Joe Richardson (0-1) will take the mound for GW against Tulane's Robby Broach in game two of this three game set. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 3:00 pm EST.
