Strong Pitching Leads Colonials To 8-0 Win Over UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, MD- Senior pitcher Tommy Gately threw six shutout innings and the bullpen provided three hitless frames as the George Washington baseball team cruised to an 8-0 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Stadium.
GW (2-2) handed Gately a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Consecutive walks by UMES starter Karim Gonzalez to freshman Owen Beightol and senior Brendon Kelliher gave the Colonials two runners on base with just one out. Beightol would advance to third base following a fly out. Head coach Steve Mrowka then called for the double steal, as Kelliher successfully stole second base Beightol sprinted home to put GW ahead 1-0.
One run is all the Colonial pitchers would need as Gately struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing just one walk and three hits in six innings of work. Six of the first nine outs recorded by the GW defense were by virtue of a Gately strikeout.
The bullpen would continue the dominance as Kenny O'Brien, Craig Lejeune and Chris Keiper would provide three hitless innings to complete the shutout.
GW would add a run in the seventh inning and six runs in the eighth. Kelliher finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with two RBI while Kyle Gelling, Ollie Mittag and Jimmy Best also knocked in one run each.
GW will head south this weekend to New Orleans, LA to for a three-game series with Tulane University. The Green Wave is 2-2 overall to start the season, winning a three-game series with Sam Houston State two games to one, and dropping a 13-1 decision to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday. First pitch on Friday evening is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
