"I couldn't be prouder of how Andres finished up today," said head coach Terry Shaffer ('79). "He played very well and deserved to win."
Pumariega sat in second place out of 105 golfers through 36 holes of action on Monday, but erased the one stroke difference in the final round to earn a share of the tournament title. He started Tuesday play on hole No. 3 and bogeyed three of his first eight holes, but rebounded for birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 16 to battle back to the top of the leaderboard.
"I really tried to stay patient and have a positive attitude," said Pumariega. "This was a tough course and I got off to a rocky start today, but I knew I had a chance to win if I stayed mentally focused."
The Colonials finished fifth as a squad in the 21-team pack with a combined three-round score of 47-over 911.
Freshman Jack Persons shot a final-round score of 8-over 80 to finish in a tie for 21st place with a 54-hole total of 10-over 226. Senior Martin Liu, who sat in 85th after round one, shot a 5-over 77 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 65th with a three-round 22-over 238.
Senior Taylor Fuqua shot a 7-over 79 in the final round for a three-day 23-over 239 to tie for 72nd place. Freshman Jonathan Dresnick finished in a tie for 88th after shooting a final-round 12-over 84 for a 54-hole total of 27-over 243.
"This tournament gave us the boost we needed heading into our spring season," said Coach Shaffer. "I am pleased with how everyone played and I hope we can keep it up in the offseason."
The Colonials take a break until March 2012 when they kick off their spring season at the Appalachian State Bash at the Beach. The tournament will take place at the Surf Golf Club in
