Colonials Fall to Penn, 5-2

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- GW women's tennis team took on a tough Penn team on Sunday, falling 5-2 at Levy Pavilion. The Quakers (3-2) avenged a 4-3 loss last season to the Colonials (1-1).
Penn got out to a quick start, sweeping GW in doubles action. Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn, at No. 1 doubles, were only able to net three points on Penn's Alexa Ely and Connie Hsu in the 8-3 loss. Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner fell to Jamie Yapp-Shing and Stephanie Do, 8-3, as well.
In singles action, Corba fought against Penn's No. 14 Hsu, but fell 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.
Freshman Julia Blakeley, at No. 2 singles, won a first set tie-breaker over Ely and carried the momentum to win 7-6(5), 6-3, for the Colonials first victory of the day.
Fellow newcomer Leah Pascarella, dropped the first set to Do, 2-6, but battled back to win the next two sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles for the Colonials other singles victory.
GW next gears up to face area rivals George Mason and Howard in weekend matches. The Colonials will host the Patriots on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Montclair Country Club in Woodbridge, VA, with matches to start at 2:00 p.m. The squad has a quick turn-a-round, facing Howard on Sunday, Feb. 6, at 8:30 a.m. at the Montclair Country Club.
