Colonials Drop 14-13 Shootout To Minutemen

AMHERST, MA - A day after only managing three hits and a single run the George Washington University baseball team bounced back with 17 hits and 13 runs but still fell just short in a 14-13 defeat in Amherst, MA. The Colonials came back from a 10-3 deficit in the fifth inning and managed to bring up the go-ahead run in the ninth inning after trailing by as much as eight runs in the seven inning.
Lots of Colonial batters produced big days as seven had multi-hit games and four had multi-RBI games in the loss. Freshman Robbie Haben had three hits and a walk and hit his first collegiate home run in the contest. The backstop also drove in three runs and scored two runs of his own in the game.
Senior Chris Holland went 3-4 in the contest with a walk and scored two runs of his own. Redshirt senior Chris Luick also hit his ninth home run in the game and also drove in two runs and scored two of his own. Both of his hits went for extra bases as his other hit was a double. Sophomore Ollie Mittag went 2-4 in the game which included a bases clearing double in the ninth inning, which cut the four-run deficit all the way down to one. Freshman Tyler McCarthy also went 3-5 and scored two runs on the day.
On the mound junior Joe Richardson got the loss as he was only able to get into the third inning and allowed just three earned runs, but eight total in dropping to 5-4 on the season.
The Colonials also witnessed a historic game by senior center fielder Brian Baudinet of UMass, who went 5-5 and his four homeruns while also driving in seven runs. Baudinet wasn't the only Minutemen with multiple home runs as sophomore Tom Conley hit two runs and went 3-3 in the contest. All told, the Minutemen hit seven homeruns on the afternoon.
The Colonials now will have their only week without mid-week games as they take final exams. They resume A-10 Conference play Friday, May 7th when they travel to Temple for a three-game series. The Colonials are currently tied with Rhode Island for second place and could also be tied with Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis as well if they win their contests still in progress.
