
Colonials Fall in Close Match to Columbia, 4-3

COLLEGE PARK, MD - GW women's tennis fell to a tough Columbia University team Friday, 4-3, breaking up the Colonial's two-match win-streak.
Freshman Mimi Hamling and sophomore Zoe Krohn opened the match with an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles for the Colonials. The Lions took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, sophomore Jacqueline Corba battled Natasha Makarova to a tie-breaker in the first set, falling 7-6 (3) and 6-2 in the second set. Columbia also got victories over Hamling, at No. 2 singles with Chelsea Davis winning 6-4, 6-2, and Dorota Lysienia at No. 3 singles with Eliza Matache victorious through a tie-breaker situation 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Junior Jennifer Hirsh defeated Katarian Kovacevic at No. 4 singles 7-6 (1), 6-3.
Krohn also won at the No. 5 position after dropping the first set 4-6 to Diana Shapoval, coming back to take the second set, 7-6 (1), to force and win a super tiebreaker 1-0 (9).
Meg Tyner, at No. 6 singles, defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1.
The Colonials open their outdoor season on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m. against Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's at the Mount Vernon Tennis Facility.
