ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team returned to action Wednesday at Barcroft Park and dropped two games to the Red Foxes by scores of 9-7 and 6-3. The Colonials held leads in both games but were unable to control the Marist attack. Senior Ryan Lapointe threw a complete game in the second game and freshman Jeff Griffith got the start in the first game and allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Junior Brendon Kelliher led the Colonials offense in the first game, going 3-4 with a run scored and two driven in. Senior Brandon Gillette also had a strong game, reaching base three times and scoring two runs. Senior Tom Zebroski also hit his third home run of the season in the third inning to push across the first two Colonial runs.
Marist was led by Ricky Pacione in the first game, as he went 5-5 and drove in four runs. Dan Zlotnick got the win for the Red Foxes after throwing five innings and allowing two earned runs to pick up the win.
The second contest saw the Colonials take another 2-0 lead early on, but a five run fifth inning helped Marist take a lead they would not relinquish on the game. Kelliher once again led the Colonials in the second game, hitting a home run and making many strong defensive plays in center field.
Senior Tom Zebroski had two hits and a run scored in the second game. The Red Foxes were led by catcher Ben Luderer, who went 3-3 with two runs driven in.
The Colonials will now play three games against DC rival Georgetown, with the first game at Barcroft Park and the two weekend contests at Shirley Povich field. The Friday game has a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
