ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - Sophomore Sara Mostafa's 14-point, 10-rebound double-double wasn't enough as the George Washington women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game in a 74-50 loss to St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center Sunday afternoon.
Mostafa finished 4-of-6 from the field and made all six of her free throw attempts to post her fifth double-double of the season. Sophomore Tiana Myers added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and four assists for GW, which dropped to 5-18 overall, 2-8 and a tie for 11th place in the Atlantic 10.
Dana Mitchell and Megan Van Tatenhove combined for 34 points on 15-of-28 shooting and the Bonnies bench chipped in 30 points as St. Bonaventure (18-8, 6-5 A-10) won for the first time in three games. Mitchell, who was coming off a season-low two points in a loss at Charlotte Wednesday, converted 9-of-12 shots en route to a game-high 20 points to spark SBU's 52.7 percent shooting.
The Colonials were playing their first game in eight days after having a mid-week game against Richmond postponed due to the massive snowfall in the Washington Metro area last week.
Trailing 10-7 early, the Colonials managed just one field goal over a span of 6:28 midway through the first half in a 13-4 Bonnies run which led to their largest deficit of the period, 25-11, with 7:52 left. GW got as close as eight on back-to-back field goals from Mostafa, but a pair of foul shots from Andrea Doneth gave St. Bonaventure a double-digit lead, 29-19, at halftime.
The teams' traded the first four baskets of the second half before a 12-0 run - six points from Mitchell and back-to-back three pointers from Jessica Jenkins and Chelsea Bowker - put the Bonnies on top 45-23 with 13:33 remaining.
The Colonials closed within 51-36 by the 9:14 mark on the strength of a 13-6 run, but the Bonnies quickly answered with a 9-2 spurt and the margin never dipped below 20 points the final seven minutes.
GW shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48) from the field and registered season-lows of one steal and six forced turnovers.
The Colonials return to Charles E. Smith Center to host 13th-place Fordham in an important A-10 contest Saturday at 2:00 pm. The game will be GW's annual Pink Zone game sponsored by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and all fans are encouraged to join all players, coaches and staff by wearing pink in support of breast cancer research.
